For Art lovers and Ocean Park aficionados, a very exciting exhibition is underway. A retrospective of paintings by artist Richard Diebenkorn is opening at the Orange County Museum of Art. Titled Richard Diebenkorn: The Ocean Park Series, this is the first major museum exhibition to specifically explore the artist’s work created in our neighborhood from 1967 to 1988.
Ocean Park has long served as home to a number of important modern American artists. Diebenkorn's two studios were located on Main Street near Ashland. It was from here that he painted this series of 145 works. Diebenkorn is one of the most beloved post-war artists, and the Ocean Park Series is arguably the most celebrated of his illustrious career.
When: FEB 26, 2012 through MAY 27, 2012
What: To learn more about the opening and Richard Diebenkorn, visit the museum website at: http://www.ocma.net
If you are interested, but not able to make it to the show, a beautiful catalog is available here. The catalog explores Diebenkorn's time in our community and it's impact on his work. It also features photography by long-time Ocean Park resident (and OPA member) Miriam Ginzburg. Miriam and The Ocean Park Association are given credit for their help with the book.
"Increasingly, where you were, became part of who you were.... We didn't just live in Ocean Park; we loved it."
-- Peter Levitt, from his piece in the exhibition Catalog titled, "Richard Diebenkorn and the Poetics of Place."
