OPA serves to provide a platform for ideas and initiatives affecting Ocean Park in particular, and Santa Monica in general. At our October 10 meeting supporters and opponents of a number of measures to be found on November’s Santa Monica ballot made presentations to OPA’s board and members.

Following the presentations, the OPA Board voted to support five of the measures and propositions on the Santa Monica November 2016 Ballot, and took no position on two. The following is OPA's Official Stance:

MEASURES GS AND GSH - SUPPORT
Measure GSH proposes an increase in the city sales tax of 1/2% on items on which purchasers are currently required to pay sales tax.  Measure GS is the accompanying advisory that directs the Santa Monica City Council to split the revenue from the increase between our public schools and affordable housing.

MEASURE SM - SUPPORT

Measure SM expands the prohibition against political contributions as rewards for certain official actions and creates an exemption for volunteers serving certain City-funded non-profits. It also clarifies the application of the existing prohibitions, the City Attorney's authority and enforcement responsibilities, and the scope of available remedies.

PROPOSITION A - SUPPORT
Measure A provides funding at County level for Parks, Open Spaces and Natural Local Water Resources.

PROPOSITION 56 - SUPPORT
State Proposition 56 proposes a $2/pack increase on cigarettes to fund Healthcare, Tobacco Use Prevention, Research, and Law Enforcement

MEASURE LV NO POSITION
This measure would amend the City's LUCE and Zoning Ordinance to address the current level of development in the city by adding new requirements for voter approval of major development projects; development agreements, excluding affordable housing and moderate income and senior housing projects, among others; and voter approval of changes to land use and planning policy documents.

MEASURE V – NO POSITION
The Board of Trustees of the Santa Monica Community College District requests voter approval to issue $345,000,000 in bonds at legal rates to repair, update, construct, modernize, equip facilities for technology, etc.

OPA cannot by law endorse individual candidates for office, however OPA was proud to help organize the recent Neighborhood Council Candidates Forum. If you follow this link: http://tinyurl.com/j4d3jt4 you’ll see the whole Forum; while this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0upvNE68A4 points to the “Lightning  Round” of questioning.
