Proposed Letter to City Council Endorsing the Airport Commission's Recommendations on Airport Impact Mitigations

Honorable City Councilmembers,

In making recommendations as a result of the just-completed Phase II Airport Visioning, City Staff has inexplicably produced a document that appears at odds with the majority of the public input it received. A careful evaluation of the 150 comment cards from those Visioning workshops shows that the majority sentiment was, in fact, consistent with the results of the surveys conducted by CASMAT and the Ocean Park Association, two local community groups. Those independent voluntary surveys elicited feedback from more than 1,300 residents which showed that over 80% of the respondents were in favor of mitigating neighborhood impacts, including an option to close the airport.

In response to community inputs, the Santa Monica Airport Commission made a set of recommendations to the City Council (#2012-2 and #2012-3, unanimously approved on May 16, 2012) regarding potential actions to be taken to mitigate airport impacts on the community.  These actions include, but are not limited to, changes regarding current and future aircraft operations at Santa Monica Airport.  Unlike Staff’s Phase II recommendations, the Airport Commission recommendations are aligned with community desires.

To settle the question of resident sentiment, we support conducting a large scale community survey for the purposes stated. We also support the full implementation of Santa Monica Airport Commission Recommendations 2012-2 and 2012-3 unanimously approved in May 2012 regarding the current and future operations of the Santa Monica Airport.
